The duration of the sleepers depends on their resistance to fungus, insects and mechanical pressure. To prevent the sleepers from rotting, they are impregnated with chemical substances, of which the most widely known is creosote, although solutions of copper or zinc salts are also used. Through impregnation, the sleeper can be kept in a useful state for 25 to 30 years instead of 5 years.
